Tamilnadu Pipevine is a twining herbs with branches
angular. Leaves are 7-16 x 2.5-5 cm, oblong-lanceshaped, long tapering
at tip, flat to somewhat heart-shaped at base, 5-ribbed. Flowers are
borne in few-flowered monochasial racemes, with minute bracts. Flower
tube is 2-2.5 cm long, with bulbous base 5-6 mm across; limb brown,
oblique, 1-lipped, 2-2.5 cm long, 0.6-1 cm wide, ovate; margins
reflexed. Gynostemium is included in the bulbous portion. Style column
is 6-lobed. Capsules are 1.5-2 x 1-1.5 cm, ovoid, drooping, 6-ridged
and valved, splitting at upper part and hanging like a basket. Seeds
are triangular, about 3 mm across. Tamilnadu Pipevine is found in South
Western Ghats. Flowering: September-January.
Medicinal uses: The juice of leaves and
rhizome of Tamilnadu Pipevine is used in combination with other plants
for the treatment of snakebite by the Kani tribes.
